We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

Monthly meetings of the NJAG are free and open to the public - all are welcomed. Meetings usually feature a presentation about astronomy or space science by an amateur or professional astronomer. Click "Read More" below for details!

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 8 p.m. (except August); light refreshments will be served. Meeting will be held at Montclair State University in the Center for Environmental and Life Sciences (CELS). This is the new large white building next to Richardson Hall and Science Hall. NJAG will usually meet in room 110 on the first floor (this is the room off on the left hand side at the back of the main lobby area). Note occasionally when room 110 is not available, we meet in room 207 on the second floor at the top of the stairs.

Northern Lights

Aurora

The June meeting of the North Jersey Astronomical Group will feature a presentation “My Northern Lights Adventure.” Our guest speaker will be Mary Ducca, Vice President of Amateur Astronomers Inc. During her presentation she will talk about her trip to Tromso, Norway to see the famous Northern Lights. She will share her experiences and wonderful pictures of a beautiful and eerie phenomenon!

Join us on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 8 PM

Montclair State University, CELS Building, room 110.

Starburst!

Antenna GalaxyStarburst! Looking at Galaxies as Stellar Factories

Our guest speaker for the April 10 meeting of NJAG will be Adam Broussard, an Astronomy PhD Candidate at Rutgers University. His presentation will be "Starburst! Looking at Galaxies as Stellar Factories."

Galaxies are like the cities of the universe. They are the islands in the void where stars are born, live, and die. The mechanisms by which cold nebulae of gas and dust become hot luminous stars is a topic of ongoing research.

Join us at 8 p.m. Montclair State University, CELS Building, room 110.

March Meeting - Radio Astronomy

radio telescopes, VLA

Radio Astronomy in a Nutshell

The March 13 meeeting of the NJAG will feature a presentation by one of our members, Ken Udani. Come learn about exploration of the Universe through radio waves. They are invisible but all around us and carry information about stars, pulsars, galaxies and other exotic celestial objects!

8 pm CELS building room 110.

February Meeting

February Meeting - sundogSolar Physics from Antarctica

On Wednesday, Feb 13, 2019, Dr. Hyomin Kim from the Center for Solar Terrestrial research at NJIT will give a presentation about solar physics research he did while living in Antarctica.

January Meeting

 January - Telescope Training

There will be no formal club meeting in January. NJAG will be holding a telescope training session to prepare for this spring's Telescope Nights which resume on Jan. 24.

December Meeting - Winter Solstice Celebration

SolsticeDecember Meeting - Winter Solstice Celebration

At the December NJAG meeting, on Wed. Dec. 12, members and their guests will gather for the annual Winter Solstice Celebration. This is a "potluck" style event - bring a snack or dish to share!

October: Eyepieces for Astronomy

EyepiecesNJAG President Mark Zdziarski will talk about telescope eyepieces at the October 10 NJAG meeting. His presentation will be "Eyepiece Choices for Astronomical Observing: Optimize your observing with the proper eyepieces and filters for your telescope."

The telescope is only part of the optical train. The quality and performance of your eyepieces play a very big role regarding your experience while observing. A poor performing eyepiece can put a damper on your observing experience. There are eyepieces that excel on planets, and those best for deep sky. Some are best for eyeglass wearers, and more! Filters can enhance your planetary and deep sky experiences as well, especially in light pollution. Come learn what choices are available to optimize your telescope!

November: Astrobiology

AstrobiologyThe November NJAG meeting will feature guest speaker Kathy Wydner Kawalek from St. Peter's University. Dr. Wydner is a biologist who studies the search for life beyond Earth. Her presentation will be about Astrobiology. This includes the definition and origin of life, the search for habitable planets, the exploration of our solar system and beyond, and the future of life on Earth and elsewhere.

Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018. 8 pm CELS room 110.
